Pedagogy of Freedom: Ethics, Democracy, and Civic Courage
Published in Paperback by Rowman & Littlefield (15 December, 2000)
Average review score:

teacher to the worldThis small work is packed with wonderfully articulate insights, philosophical, political and practical, about education and how we should go about teaching young students. Paulo Friere is an enemy of oppression, coercion and neo-liberalism, a proponent of the human spirit and the possibility of a better world. If you are really interested in the ideas of existentialism, socialism, democracy and social justice, you will find yourself entralled with Friere's practical ideas in this book.

Peg O'My Heart and Other Favorite Song Hits, 1912 and 1913
Published in Paperback by Dover Pubns (July, 1989)
Average review score:

What Did Your Grandparents and Great Grandparents Do For EntThey sang these songs. And what does it say about these songs that many of them live some 90 years later, and are used still in popular media? You Made Me Love You has always been around, but did you know the story behind the chorus? It's in the verses. In fact, you will be exposed to a cross section of Tin Pan Alley, Blues, Musical Theatre, Art Song and Broadway via a trip through this book. Snookey Ookums still connects with anyone who knows syrupy lovers, and Row Row Row will be easier to 'figure out' with the original verses to support it. You get the covers too, albeit in black and white. An added bonus: Many of these songs are on my site if you would like to sing along! So buy the book, and get your voice warmed up.

Perspectives on Stanley Kubrick (Perspectives on Film)
Published in Hardcover by Twayne Pub (July, 1996)
Average review score:

Definitely the best anthology on the master to date. After reading this compilation of texts about the late-great filmmaker Stanley Kubrick, I got the feeling I knew more than before about the master. PERSPECTIVES is filled with details about his films and about the way he worked as an artist. It is an important contribution to Kubrick studies. This anthology edited by Falsetto covers the first period (i.e. from his second film KILLER'S KISS) all the way to his (next) to last production (the incredible war flick FULL METAL JACKET). It even includes an article by Kubrick himself, as well as a piece wrote by Anthony Burgess on Kubrick's adaptation of his famous novel A CLOCKWORK ORANGE. Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested to know more about Kubrick's work or about cinema in general. It is a must-read for any Kubrick aficionados and, as far as I know, the only serious compilation of writings about this true genius of cinema. By far one of the best book on the master to date. Let's hope that the author or the publisher will reprint it in a paperback format, so that more people will have access to it.

Peter the Great
Published in Library Binding by William Morrow (September, 1999)
Average review score:

Just a great book!I learned so much from this book. It is absorbing and I would love to share it with my students. Peter the Great is a very interesting figure and I wish I had been introduced to him earlier in my life.

Petrosinella: A Neapolitan Rapunzel
Published in Library Binding by Dial Books for Young Readers (May, 1995)
Average review score:

An Active RapunzelPetrosinella came before Rapunzel and is a spunkier character. Like Rapunzel, she is held captive by the witch after being taken from her mother. Petrosinella, however, uses her wits to escape her captor and live happily ever after. This story originally appeared in Giambattista Basile's Il Pentamerone almost 400 years ago. The illustrations are beautiful and reflect both today's tastes as well as the age of the story. I recommend this book for anyone looking for an old twist on a tale that is more exciting than the one we are most familiar with. END

The Pillar of Fire
Published in Paperback by Urbi Et Orbi Communications (15 January, 2001)
Average review score:

Jewish to Catholic Conversion StoryDr. Karl Stern's story is an often overlooked, yet fascinating examination of the claims of Catholicism from a Jewish perspective.
Growing up as a Jew in Germany, prior to and during World War II, Stern offers great insights into Judaism and Catholicism under Hitler.
This compelling book, and Stern himself, played a major role in the conversion of Dr. Bernard Nathanson to the Catholic faith. Nathanson is a former abortionist and the former head of NARAL who published his own book, "The Hand of God."
The last chapter, Stern's letter to his brother, is alone worth the price of the book.

A Pitch of Philosophy: Autobiographical Exercises (Jerusalem-Harvard Lectures)
Published in Paperback by Harvard Univ Pr (April, 1996)
Average review score:

On the inheritance of philosophyStanley Cavell stands as one of the most acute interpreters of the
human condition that America has ever produced. _A Pitch of Philosophy_
is part autobiography, part exegesis, and part philosophical reflection on
selfhood and identity. Combining reflection on the course of his
own life with philosophical work of the highest order, Cavell weaves a compelling
tale of what it means to come to know oneself, and to come to know oneself as
a philosopher. Against what can be seen as the existential sterility of
modern Anglo-American analytic philosophy, Cavell awakens the reader to
the intimate connection between philosophy and autobiography. Along the way he candidly
reveals to the reader the ways in which his own life has been a gradual acceptance
of the inheritance of American philosophy. Cavell's may be the most distinctive American
voice in the chorus of modern philosophy to have yet been heard, and _A Pitch of Philosophy_
stands as the crown jewel of his life's work.

Plato's Symposium
Published in Paperback by Saint Augustine's Pr (May, 1999)
Average review score:

All you ever wanted to know about SymposiumI thought I understood the Symposium. I had a copy of Allen's commentary and was truly satisfied. Then this one fell into my hands. Sometimes the depth of Rosen's erudition is hard to take, but then which would you prefer 5 watts or 50 watts per channel. Sure, this is probably more than I want to know right now, so I'll read it again later and it will probably be a different book by then. Rosen is no babysitter. This is a very great book, but it is also serious scholarship. If you don't want the brainburn associated with reading someone who comes to conclusions that are often over your head (I speak here from experience) get Allen's book or the Cliff notes and leave this one alone. Moreover, the style is scholarly dry as dust. I like that. If you don't leave this one alone. This is the best, more detailed and probably definite commentary on Plato and Eros (until someone comes out with a commentary on the Symposium and the Phaedrus together that matches this one in depth).

Play Therapy: A Strategic Approach
Published in Hardcover by Charles C Thomas Pub Ltd (December, 1990)
Average review score:

I have translated this book into Chinese in TaiwanI am a child psychiatrist from Taiwan, and I am very interested in many psychosocial treatments, including psychodrama, group psychotherapy, play therapy, and sandplay therapy. I found this book very practical to teacher, child counselor, and child psychotherapist.Though it is a small book,it contains the thorough descriptions of therapist' role, ways of reflections, treatment skills, and the treatment tempo. It is not just a skill book;it has it's own theoretical orientation, but it can also fit with other kinds of approach. So I translated this book into Chinese, and the Chinese edition has been published formally in Taiwan by Wunan Publishing Company on September 2000.I use this book to supervise psychiatric residents and couselors, and I find it helpful.Hope that you also enjoy this book.

The Poem: An Anthology
Published in Hardcover by Pearson Education POD (24 February, 1997)
Average review score:

A Poetry Anthology You Can Live WithThis collection of poetry from Chaucer to the modern poets has been with me for twenty years and still provides inspiration. While there are many famous poems in it, the editor's intent seems to be also to show the diversity of various poets' styles, and to choose based on quality rather than popularity. My father, an avid reader of poetry, has been trying to steal my copy for a long time! Many good vocabulary notes are provided.
